Communication

Communication is essential to any relationship, and is particularly important when sharing accommodation.

Communication is more than speech, it involves non-verbal language and active listening.

Body language that aids communication includes: making direct eye contact (but not staring), a warm relaxed facial expression, and a relaxed, slightly forward leaning posture.

Active listening involves clearing your mind of any judgments, assumptions and attitudes that interfere with your ability to hear what the other person is saying.  It also involves checking to make sure you understand what is being said.

Use ‘I’ message (‘I feel, I think, I want’).  Taking responsibility for your own feelings, thoughts, and needs empowers you and creates more room for negotiation between individuals.

If conflicts occur, avoid personal attacks and focus instead on specific behaviours.
